PIERRE RIEU MARKETS HIS FATHER

CHAPEAU MAGAZINE: From the very beginning of his career, the entire approach has been done by André Rieu together with his wife Marjorie. This solid team of two has been expanded into a team of three in the last few years, since son Pierre has grown into the business. He started out as a helper and in now part of the directors. His role is becoming more and more important.

►How did you happen to grow into that role?
Let me start by saying, there is only one leader and that is Dad. I started by reorganizing the technical aspects. That has always been my passion. When I was around eight years old I already accompanied them on the truck. A white one, which we had bought from a baker.

►Were you brought up in the business, in the sense that it was apparent that your Dad was involved in music?
I did notice that. At home we always listened to music, and during the time of the Salon Orchestra and afterwards the Johann Strauss Orchestra I always wanted to tag along. Early on I felt that my future was there. During high school I did think about another career as a lawyer. I did start my studies for that, but after about five weeks or so, I came to the conclusion that this would not turn out to be successful. I was then already employed in the company.

►Weren’t your parents worried whether that combination would work, studying and touring with the orchestra?
No, they were like, let him find that out for himself. One or the other will succumb. And that was rather quickly apparent. There is no school to go to for what I do here, that school is right here. There are different situations every day, and every day I am busy with different people. I learned a lot from my parents and also from the people around me, even today.

CASTLES

►You haven’t had the idea yet, due to your role in your company, to do a specific study say in, economics, or to work abroad for a year with a different orchestra or artist, purely for the experience?
No, because what you learn there you can not apply to ARP (André Rieu Productions); you would still have to throw that experience away. My Mom sometimes pulls her hair out: "What has he come with now?" We do not work with a budget either. Our financial advisor, Roel van Veghel, has tried to institute that numerous times, but to no avail. Even the Schönbrunn idea, that just popped into Dads head and then he says: "I think we should do that". Of course we do look at our finances, but we still go ahead with the plan. In the end it turned out that it costs us three times as much as we thought. It sure had its setbacks, but it did wonders for us. The tour through Australia cost us 28 million Euros, and if we had spent that amount of money on marketing via spots, billboards, advertising and the like, we would never have had the same results. The marketing we received from that tour has been invaluable and went all over the world. It goes without saying, at least, that "some fool" copied this huge castle, and was even able to attract many, many visitors with it.

►I can remember when you erected the castle for the first time in Toronto, and a few hours before the beginning you had an electrical failure. It took a week with hundreds of people to erect that behemoth. It turned out to be successful, but for you extremely stressful.
I will not deny that. It was so exciting. We had done a trial build at our stage builder in Germany, but only the frame. The façade was made in Maastricht and they finally came together in Toronto. Thousand of façade panels had to fit together. There were so many uncertainties. The panels were placed in sea containers still wet with paint. I thought: "Oh my God, I hope everything goes well".

►Looking back it was an enormous risk you took because the stadium was filled with 35,000 attendees for each of the two evenings. Afterwards you had to slow down a lot since you had reached your limits.
Yes, I have really learned to know them now.

NEW MARKETS

►Back then you were in charge of the technical aspects, while now you are acting in more of a general and also financial capacity.
Right now my primary task is researching new markets. We employ 120 people. And in order to have them functioning properly we have to conduct a certain amount of concerts per year. The equation of revenue and costs. We cannot survive on the Netherlands and Germany only every year, nor can we go to Australia every year. We have just returned from Australia, and now have to stay away for twenty months or so. You sort of have to create a shortage. And every market is again different. I have just returned from Brazil, where Roel and I spoke with a local promoter. It is one of the few countries where you have to work together with a local promoter to organize a tour there. Normally we rent the venue, do the marketing and sell the tickets. We do all this ourselves. But in North and South America, we noticed, by trial and error, that you do not accomplish anything without a local promoter. The cultures are so much different. There are so many rules and unwritten laws, that you really have to watch out. We have now found someone in Brazil who immediately called the owner of the largest TV station in the country to set up appointments. That does make a difference. And it also depends on the individual whether the product appeals to him or not.

►Is everything then set for Brazil?
We are now starting with the sales and everything else will follow. The first time we’ll be going to Sao Paulo. The expectations are really enormous, apparently larger than Australia, although we sold 3.5 million DVD’s there in a population of 15 million people. Almost every family there has one of our DVD’s. In Brazil the enthusiasm is now already large. You can see that by the reactions on our web site, but we also have a relative amount of Brazilians at our concerts in for instance Florida and Australia, and they also come to Maastricht.

►And you drive that fever even higher?
Of course, that is all part of marketing. It is extremely exciting.

MARKETING

The public really has no idea that with such a career and tours you really need to boost them with marketing. To just play a violin and wait to be discovered is not sufficient. You must always manifest yourself with initiatives in order to continue. I can still remember when my parents made flyers for a concert in the neighborhood with the Salon Orchestra. And then they would wait at home for the phone to ring. But that did not happen of course. You have to be actively involved and need to aggressively follow up. Also Brazil will not run by itself, you have to be physically present. Mexico was a bit of an exception. We only placed one ad for 1600 Euro. Through word of mouth advertising we sold 40,000 tickets, but that is exceptional. For the rest you need to maintain your initiative. Only now, since the "Second Waltz" we certainly do not have to explain who we are and what we do.

►How about the other tour plans?
We think that after the first concerts in Sao Paulo we might return to Brazil rather quickly, and combine that with Chili and Argentina.

►And the USA? You did have a promoter there, one who even worked for Michael Jackson. He was going to ensure a real breakthrough?
We have been doing everything in the USA by ourselves. The first years with a loss. Now we earn a little there. But André is still not really a star over there. In New York he can still just walk about the street, but not in Australia. In the US it is just a totally different system, with its own business channels. We are working with this promoter, but he still has to not come thru. We will manage though.

MAASTRICHT

►Could it be that André’s concerts do not sell in certain countries, just because there is a different taste in music? That you just have to forget about those countries?
I do not believe that. In the USA the public is very enthusiastic, but you have to regularly appear on TV, and that opens the market for you. That right now is still too fragmented. But for now we are going semi-live with the Vrijthof concerts in theaters. We did that too last year, but now we are going worldwide to some thousand cinemas. That’s really going to be something. It will be costly, but we think it will be a good way to entice the market.

DAD WILL GO ON FOR ANOTHER TWENTY YEARS

►Are there any other countries you are working on?
You have undoubtedly heard that we are working on North Korea. Not easy, of course, but those people come to Maastricht and they would like us to be there. Yes, and we told them that there has to be peace there first. Of course we have no control over that, but who knows, we might just be the initiators.

►And is it not difficult to repeatedly come up with a new and interesting program for Maastricht, because you need to vary?
It’s not all that bad. There are a fixed number of components that have to be there, otherwise it will not click.

►You are doing the Vrijthof concerts now for the seventh time. Any idea how long you will be doing them?
Well yes, we currently have no plans to stop any time soon. At the "Preuvenemt" (large culinary fair) I believe Dad played for nineteen years. To match that we would need a few more years.

FILM

►Leon de Winter has written a script for a movie. What is the status of that?
Leon has written a fantastic script. It will not be a biographical movie. Dad says: "I am not dead yet". It is more a story. Dad plays himself, meets Johann Strauss, plays his music, and here is even a mistress in it. Anyway, a romantic story with plenty of music. But we are not going to do that ourselves, since movies are not our business. We are not going to finance it either, that has to come from the movie producers. We’ll see how it will all turn out. But if we happen to run into a movie producer, we would definitely take advantage of that.

►Could film actor Anthony Hopkins play a role in that? He was recently here because André arranged a piece of music written by him (Hopkins) and it is rumored that he will return during the Vrijthof concerts.
In any case, they get along very well together. I will not rule out that when a friendship develops that Anthony Hopkins will offer and assist us to take the correct paths in the film world, well, we are not against that. In any case, he will come and listen to his own waltz which André will play on the Vrijthof. That is quite exceptional that he is willing to do that, he is more famous than Dad.

EFFICIENCY

►You are busy with new markets, but sometimes you look critically over the shoulders to see if all expenditures are equally useful and efficient.
That is one of my busiest occupations. It is not always a question of skimping. Every now and then I’ll say: "Hey Dad, shouldn’t we do this or that extra?" I am not only concerned with turning the money flow off. André is someone who has a million ideas a day. That is good, otherwise we would never have come this far. It is also good when someone else looks at it from a different view. I look at it from another generation’s point of view. During the concerts I am always in the venue and I get a good understanding what the public is feeling. And I relay that later to him.

►Do you operate sort of like the Holy Trinity, Father, Mother and son?
Just leave the holy stuff out. We work very well together and have a good feeling about each other. Dad’s illness last year has brought us even closer together. Then it became even more apparent that without him nothing happens here.

►And there are no alternatives, or maybe, with you in another role.
Well, violin for me that will never amount to anything. I still study the piano and play trumpet every now and then, but there is no time for me to do anything professional with that and I have no further plans for that. No, the fact is that our triangle is constructed in such a way, that if one of us would fall out, it would become extremely difficult for us.

►It must be enjoyable work since the trust is undoubtedly very large.
Certainly, there is no doubt about it. When we say it is "A" then it is "A".

THE SON OF

►When you were really placed in charge, did the other people who had worked there longer, not respond surprised or reserved with the adage of: Here comes the boss’s son. Did they feel that as a threat?
Of course, that is a normal reaction. I was nineteen when I was placed in charge of people who had been there for ten years. So you can imagine how they felt about that. Of course I did get to hear that at times, that I was being viewed as a brat. But it was also a tough school. If you are the boss’s son you have to work three times as hard, just to prove yourself. You have to learn that and I stumbled quite hard a few times.

AS ‘SON OF’ YOU HAVE TO PROVE YOURSELF THREE TIMES OVER

►During the time when the castles became a little too expensive, didn’t your financial advisor reassure your bankers? They had to take a risk and does that still play a role or is that over with?
I think that on both sides we now can sleep a little easier. There was quite a time frame when the Rabo Bank would pester us with the question: Isn’t it time that you undertake something again, we like to plan our credits. Well, Dad came up with an idea; a castle. I don’t think that’s what they had in mind, but they went along with it anyway. We also had to offer them something as collateral. Take our royalties, also our future royalities. I don’t believe that ultimately it was all that risky. But they were quite responsive and I do not believe that every bank would have done the same that very moment.

ILLNESS

►Yes, they like to invest in someone who is on top – or maybe that peak is still to be achieved – but also someone who can become ill.
Well, they sure did see that last year. The minute André is gone; our earnings come to a screeching halt. That was for us hard to swallow, one way or another no one had ever taken that into consideration. He always wants to go on. I also believe that he will continue to play for another decade or two. Not in today’s turbulent life style, but I do see him still performing on stage in another twenty years, providing nothing happens. But then, viewed from the other side, you have to stop when you’ve reached your peak. As long as you are not on stage as a pathetic man and nothing works anymore, that is no option. We have a feeling that we have not reached our peak yet. He is very busy, and luckily feels good.

OUR PEAK STILL HAS TO BE REACHED

►He has resumed his work again, but not in all aspects.
That he has learned. He needs to stay involved with his music, the programs and ideas. Purely on the artistic side. The rest he needs to let go. He has to learn to say "no"

TO STEP BACK

►Does he know how to do that, to step back? Or do you regularly need to remind him?
Yes, all the time. Then I say: "Dad, why do you have to do that, think of yourself". That of course is the nature of the beast and that is why he has achieved so much.

►Can you yourself step back far enough?
Ever since I have been in the business, work and private life go hand in hand. Whenever he is not on tour, Dad will come by every day to look in on the kids. And in between we chat about the new things in the business. That goes hand in hand. He is changing the kid’s diaper and at the same time asks about Brazil. That for us is very logical.

►And do you like living next to your parents?
Yes, because we have so much to do together, it makes it quite convenient. While when I need it, I do have my privacy and I do not feel any interference.

To The Attention of All Fans of The Harmony Parlor

This is something that John wrote and sent out in an email to only a few ... he wrote it as a little "story" to get out some of his frustrations because, AGAIN, his hard work on a translation was taken by the AndreRieuFans site and posted on their site as their own work. They have been doing it for a couple of years now and we have not said anything because we didn't want to put anything negative on the Parlor. But it has reached the point where John, (and myself), just can't keep going on with our work on the Parlor without it being put out in the open ........ hoping by doing so it will stop! We enjoy what we do, as do Ineke and Ruud, but it is still a lot of hard work and a lot of hours that go into it. And over and over again, they at the AndreRieuFans site take that hard work of John's Translations and just post them on their site claiming it as their own work. Maybe to some, that doesn't seem like a big deal ... but, to those who put in all the time and work, it is. It's not about just taking news articles, all the other sites share our articles, it's about the work and hours that John puts into these translations only to have them taken and claimed as their own work. If we are going to continue to do what we do on the Parlor, we are going to at least now speak up and let it be known what they are doing to us over and over and over.

Below John's little story of frustration I have also put the note that Ineke wrote on the Parlor on Facebook a couple of days ago. I am adding it on here because many fans don't have Facebook, so did not see it ............... And I'd like to say, we appreciate all the support we got from so many fans on Ineke's Facebook note. But also would like to add, that we aren't doing this for a pat on the back, we're doing it because what the AndreRieuFans site is doing to us is wrong and we just aren't going to keep quiet about it anymore. It's not fair to any of us and especially to John who works so hard at these translations for us. Sorry this comes at Christmas time, but it's not something we planned. ....................... Also below is a note from Sonja regarding "Translations". ................ Sue

"Here is John's Little Story"

This is just a little story which can be taken as fantasy or truth, whichever way you would like to take it and for whatever it is worth. The names of the individuals can be fictitious, and then again they might be correct, but it is my "story" as I see it and I'm writing it to get out some of my frustrations!!

►Once upon a weekend not so long ago, as a matter of fact it was just last weekend, a lady named Josephine, who for all practical purposes can be a very nice lady, was surfing the net like she always does, looking for any information about her beloved maestro, André. She is totally smitten with this gentleman, and will try to find as much as possible she can about this heartthrob of hers. Well, as it so happens she ventured into the Harmony Parlor where, lo and behold, there was a new article all about André and his wife Marjorie, titled "André Rieu Pays Tribute to His Wife." A very nice and lovely article I might add. Well, she read this article and was ecstatic, and thought this would be very nice for all her other André fans and friends at "AndreRieuFans" to read too.

In order to provide that service to her blog friends, she GOOGLED and found the link to the newspaper of this article. Since the Harmony Parlor had posted the name of the Newspaper at the request of the author, and also posted the authors name it was a relatively easy task. So she then posted the link on the blog of the other Andre Rieu Fan site. (Of course she did not know that the Harmony Parlor had received personal permission from the author for the translation and posting of this article) Josephine visits almost if not daily at "Andre Rieu Fans and Friends" and chats with the other fans. So on this day Josephine wrote the following:
"Hi Dear Moderator. Not sure if it will be our excellent Jeanine Ann or her sweet stand in Norma. This is absolutely Beautiful, Andres tribute to His Wife he obviously absolutely adores. They talk of a Christmas Movie with an Actor playing the part of Andre. That is going to be wonderful but I am wondering who on earth could take the part of Our Gorgeous Man !!! Lots of love Josephine xxxx"

But this notice was soon removed since Moderator Jeanine thought she could do one better and post the entire article, and henceforth get all the credit. And so it was that the moderator (Jeanine) clicked onto the link and lo and behold, there was that wonderful article all nicely translated by GOOGLE! But Google is not much of a translation and only gives you a jest as to what is being translated.
So Jeanine, thinking this is not much to post on our site, then saw at the bottom of the article a note saying: click here for the entire article. Of course she immediately did that and what she found was in fact the original article, but the print was too small, and there was no way to enlarge that print, nor copy it and then run it through an online translator.

Aha said Jeanine, no problem, I know exactly where I can go and get a proper translation. I’ll just go to the Harmony Parlor and copy theirs. They always do a superb job, and if I change a word here and there, no one will ever notice the difference. I have done it many times in the past and although they complained, I get away with it because if someone says anything at all about this, I just tell them that I use a Babelfish translation and then just put the words into proper order.(Note: kind of hard to do if you do not know the language).

Said Jeanine, I do not care about their copy right laws, plagiarism or being ethical. Whatever is on the internet is free for the taking. If they say something I’ll just play the victim, tell all my fan friends I am being harassed and they will stand behind me and support me. They believe anything I tell them.

But ...... by not being multi lingual, Jeanine does not know that a translation is like a fingerprint, and no two people will ever come up with an identical translation even although the story is the same. Also she does not realize that John, who happened to do this particular translation for the Harmony Parlor, places a few idiosyncrasies in all his translations so he knows immediately whether his translations are being copied or not. There were also a few other indications revealing that Jeanine did not in fact ever have the entire original article in her possession. And in this case, sure as the sun rises in the East, this article was again copied. (If you would like to compare, be my guest. Read the one on the Parlor and then read the one she posted on her Blog)

Of course Jeanine thought that in order not to draw attention to herself for doing the translation, she acknowledged someone named Eve and also Deirdre as translators. That made me wonder a day or so later when the same Deirdre placed the following comment on their blog: "Oh what a wonderful fairy love story!! They are the perfect couple. Thank you for sharing this fairy tale with us. MAGICAL!! Xxx" ............. The question then arose, why would someone who supposedly had just translated this article, make a statement like that? My only conclusion is that she never even saw the article until she read it on the Andre Rieu Fans site and she surely didn't "Translate" it!!

And so my dear friends, that’s my "story" ......... Again we caught Jeanine with her hands in the cookie jar so to speak and again, she is up to her old tricks. And no matter what we try to say or do, she somehow manages to turn everything around. Integrity, honesty and a respect for other people’s work, is apparently not in her vocabulary.

I will add this photo of the article in question from the internet where they claimed they got it and translated it. As you can see, it is so small you can not read it to translate it. And this is as large as it comes up on the Newspapers website.

Ineke's post on the Parlor on Facebook two days ago:

Since I received the Australian book "King of the waltz" with translated lyrics from the Dutch book "The man behind the phenominon", I compared the two translations: ours and ARP's. Although the meaning is the same, they use a totally different choice of words. No translation can ever be the same. That's why I wonder how it is possible that another AR fan website can post a translation of John/Sue's article two days after the Harmony Parlor, with just a few words changed to keep up appearances of a new translation. They never give credits to the person who did the job, they pretend they did it themselves. We call that stealing! To our regret we have to conclude that also not nice Andre Rieu fans exist! ... Ineke

A Note From Sonja

I started the first English Andre site "Translations" back in 2002, and this taking of articles and information without credit has been going on since the "andrerieufans" site began. I would put in all the work with

translating the articles they would take it and take credit for it on their site.

Back in 2003 there were no articles in English and everything available about Andre was in Dutch or German and had to be translated. The "Andrerieufans" site did not have Dutch or German speakers, but it was easy just to take it from my site, If they did have translators and did there own translations you would be able to tell.

Translations are personal, two translators can work on the same article and it will come out different. They would be similar, but would not be the same. Translating in not an exact science and the choice of words can be very personal but still have the same meaning. No two articles will ever come out exactly the same if translated by a human translators! It would not just be a changed word here and there, the sentence structure of the article would be different.

This taking of articles without credit by this other site has been going on since 2004 and is not new.

We share, Translations, the Parlor, the movie site, several German sites share information and articles, we also give credit to the translator, the author and or to the photographer. Andrerieufans site does not share and has never shared, they only take information, material that has taken hours to translate and claim it as their own work.
Having had to deal with this for many years, I have a much stronger word for them than not nice, but will not use it here, since I am a nice person.
But if you are interested in "proof" I can certainly send you some emails they have send me and the Parlor and to other fans who did not agree with them, emails which are far from nice. I am all for sharing I am not for stealing material that someone else worked on for hours. And it really is sad that this has been going for so long, long before any of the newer fans even heard of Andre Rieu ........................ Sonja

André's First Concert For 2009!

They had the Clog Dance and André did the Clog Dance with them! While the girls were dressing again into thier normal clothes the boys had a party on the stage. And during this party Franco was holding up the sign with André's picture and telephone number on it! ;-) Very funny.

It was a FANTASTIC concert! I love his new program. For me it was nearly the best he ever had.We had very good seats in the 3rd row exactly in the middle. André was in a very good mood. He smiled and made jokes the whole time. The time ran too quickly during the concert and I couldn't believe when I heared the "Radetzkymarsch" that the concert is nearly over. ~ Simone

When we stood in the queue at Computicket at the Menlyn Shopping centre in Pretoria on the 11th December 2009 to buy tickets for André Rieu, we were about fifth in the queue: Ronel Greyvensteyn, Pieter Venter, myself and my sister and my friend Ria.

Marga Ley (journalist from The Beeld newspaper) was directly in front of me. We did not know each other from a bar of soap. Marga the journalist, asked me why we were in the queue (Computicket is a booking service for any show anywhere), I said: Andre Rieu of course! She asked where we had heard that he was coming to SA, and I replied "In the Beeld of 10th December". It turned out that she (Marga) had written the story and that she was directly in contact with the man.

There was some chaos, one of the ticket terminals wasn't working properly, and the queue started getting longer. Everybody behind us was getting impatient. An hour later, all of us, after having started conversing with one another, went to a coffee bar and the "Andre Rieu Koffiemoerklub" (Andre Rieu Coffee club) came into existence, and whilst in the coffeebar, we all stood up and hollered (to the astonishment of all who walked past us) "ANDRE RIEU ROCKS!!!".

Marga, being a journalist, enquired from everyone what it was about Andre Rieu that made us react in this way. My first reaction was to say he was soft on the eye (which of course he is!). After much laughter and thought, I phoned her later the day and explained my sentiments thus:

Into a world that sometimes leaves much to be desired and to feel really good about, comes a man from Holland, and with music, which transcends all language barriers, he brings joy and laughter to the world. What had impressed me the most after having watched many of his DVD's (and I blew my budget since November 2009 buying them all), was the facial expressions of the audiences over the world. And the facial expressions of all the members of his wonderful JSO. Who else can do this? Who else has ever done this with music?

Andre's been instrumental in the many many friendships forged across the globe. He "opens up", if you will, classical music to people who would normally never consider listening to, or attend a classical concert. Both my parents were musicians - my father played clarinet and tuba, my mother could play Chopin on the piano with her eyes closed. I had attended the Bamberger Simphoniker Orchestra's concert in the State Theatre in Pretoria when the theatre opened. Of course there is a place for this kind of classical experience - Brahms Symphony 1, etc, VERY SERIOUS!

But what Andre Rieu brings to the world is what music is supposed to bring to the world. JOY, PLEASURE, BEAUTY, TEARS AND LAUGHTER, LOVE, AND GEMUTLICHKEIT (a German expression for a feeling of wellbeing). THIS is what our troubled world needs. Very old people are rejuvenated by his music, sick people find comfort (and I'm sure some of them actually get well), and people who are in pain, get solace. Simply put, he is an extraordinary human being.

The concert at Sun City on the 25th April was the most incredible experience of my life. And I have a hunch in everyone there felt the same (and still do).

Andre is loved by women and men of all ages, children and youngsters of all ages. I believe that he has sold over 300 million DVD's world wide. That of course MUST mean that many millions more watch him do his thing, because 1 DVD is not watched by 1 person only!

What more can I say. I have run out of adjectives to describe it all. He is a phenomenon. Personally, I am proud that my mother tongue (which is Afrikaans) is directly descended from Dutch, because our Dutch forefathers landed here on the 6th April 1652 with Jan van Riebeeck and his three little sail-ships. And Afrikaans evolved from Dutch.

Some Excerpts From The November Women's Weekly Magazine Australia

André laughs when asked how he feels about his huge success. Right now, Australia is his biggest market in the world. "It feels good, it feels great!! I like Australia. They like me. It feels very European to me, with down to earth normal people and a nice atmosphere."

He doesn't care about some critics who snipe about his unabashed spectacle of his concerts with their horse drawn carriages, ballet dancers, ice skaters and flying angels.

"I make music my way, he says. I have a Classical Music education. My father was a conductor of a symphony orchestra. More or less, all orchestras and all classical musicians go on stage and do their job. They seem to think it would be better if the audience wasn't there. From the beginning when I was a little boy, I didn't like that. I wanted to interact with people, that interaction makes me very happy, happier then when I'm doing things alone."

As a child ~ "There was huge pressure on me. My father was always pushing me. He was very dictatorial. What he said was law, and we had to obey him without question. I wasn't close to him, scared perhaps. I just felt that I could never please him, whatever I did was not good enough."

There is no resentment in his voice as he remembers his childhood. He shrugs and laughs at the aphorism that behind every successful man, is a small boy trying to please his parents. "People can say what they like. They can analyze me as much as they want. It's made me what I am. That education, or miseducation formed me."

"When I was a little boy, there were always soloists coming to the house ~ Yehudi Menuhin, people like that. They would always come alone with their wives, and their wives would be carrying the violin cases. It's a lonely life and I always knew I didn't want that. I always wanted to do it in a different way ~ my way ~ and I had to discover this slowly."

I said to my parents, "okay tonight I'm going to leave and I'm going to sleep with Marjorie. That was a bombshell to them. I was the black sheep of the family, but I was so lucky to meet her. She has the combination of being very down to earth and also very artistic. I think she's the most special person in the world, there's only one like her."

They're rarely photographed together and never give joint interviews. Some say this is because he is more glamorous than his wife, but the truth is, she doesn't want the attention and he doesn't need it.

RIEU THE RAPPER!

A few years ago André was on the Carmen Nebel show, a variety show in Germany. Andre is on her show about once a year. In Vienna he played Happy Birthday to her when she was in the audience during his Schonbrunn concert. On this show Carmen Nebel asked him to choose from three envelopes and do whatever was in the envelope. André agreed and she showed him a red, a blue and a white envelope. André picked the red envelope "the color of love". In the envelope was a note that he had to perform a Rap. On this little clip you will see the result of André's attempt at a Rap. Not too bad, but he better stick with the Waltz music. ~ Sonja

THREE CONCERTS IN MAASTRICHT
With Laurie & Noel Crowley

First off, I want to express our thanks & appreciation to Al Girard for all the professional pictures he took in Maastricht and at the concerts. He captured the essence of each day. Also to Sue Berry for the organization and posting of the pictures. We missed you terribly, Sue.

And thanks, as always to Ineke & Ruud for all they do for us every summer & all through the year. What would we do without you? And thanks to Beate Gundler and others for their postings, too.

Our last night in Europe was spent at a luxurious (airport) hotel in Brussels. One of the managers was from Maastricht or environs and upon learning that we had been in So. Holland inquired about our attendance at an André concert ~ which day? We mentioned that our first concert was at one of the Terrace Cafe's and she asked which one? Our answer was Vrijthof 9 and she said . . . "halfway down and across from the break in the fence." Great dinner and a great place to watch. The marching band goes in and out of the square at that point and stops in front to play several marches. And André and half the orchestra walk from the theater terrace down the street, waving all the way and then group inside for their entrance to 76 Trombones. We had a memorable dinner with Doug (Santa) Whelan from VA Beach and his niece Debbie from Atlanta. No greater people on earth!

No, we are not missing the record breaking heat with almost no air conditioning!

It is pure joy to witness André's performing before his hometown crowd (with people coming from all over the world). He always tries to be "up" wherever he performs in the world, but in Maastricht, his enjoyment is extraordinary and he just exudes the fun of performing. He puts on one great big party.

A highlight was the Fan Dinner, beginning at 5 p.m. prior to the Saturday night concert. Run each year by Ineke and Ruud, it gets better every year. We had 73 people from 5 continents and many countries. The food was fantastic ~ both salmon and chicken served. It was hot below deck, so many of us went up on top of the ship where there was a breeze to enjoy our meal. A highlight was former Mayor, Gerd Leers, and his wife who spoke very eloquently to us. He mentioned all the countries attending and how many fans. (The most were from the USA.) I thanked him for all he had done for André thru the years. A very special person.

And tenor Gary Bennett also came by. Noel had Sonja take a picture of me with Gary. He is most friendly. He walked by Gauchos one afternoon and stopped by to chat, telling us when he left Tasmania to pursue his musical career and other pertinent background. (He now lives with his family in Cologne, Germany.) Then on to the extraordinary Saturday night concert. We had wonderful seats in the 8th row center ... with Sonja, MaryAnn and Ruth from the states. Our friends, Susan & David Rosenzweig from Yonkers, NY had to cancel out with David's back acting up and I sold their tickets to Mrs. Ed and her friend from Australia. Attending with them was a thrill. The concert was absolutely outstanding ~ even with the heat. As usual, we went to the front for the many encores. With the possibility of rain, there were ponchos on every seat. (Noel's was missing) and as I had two American flags, a concert scarf and one of the flags that Alice Leung had made and sent over to decorate for the fan dinner, I left my poncho on my seat. Big mistake. Many encores and wildly popular Austrian, D.J. Otzi, was the featured performer. Then it began to pour rain and we were drenched. At least it cooled us off and the night was fairly comfortable.

I have attended 3 concerts other years, but this was the most varied ... Cafe, Vrijthof and Sunday ~ 1 p.m. at the huge MECC (Convention Center)

Because the Netherlands was scheduled to play Spain in the final soccer game for the championship Sunday evening, the city council decided to open the Vrijthof so fans could watch the game on the big screens. So-o-o, André moved the concert to the MECC at 1 p.m. We had heard that air conditioning would be available. If so, it was not turned on and I don't think I've experienced such heat in all my life. (Saturday was supposed to be 104 degrees, F.) and this was worse. Each chair had a fan on the seat and every 2nd chair had an "orange hat." Our row had blue fans, but many did have orange and gave a little relief.

This was our best concert & André went all out to make it special. The Berlin Comedian singers were encore's the first night and he included them in the body of the concert. So many fan songs were played in this concert and D.J. Otzi was the featured encore performer. It was so hot that the orchestra came in with orange fans after intermission, including André. Never, ever done before and they used them when they weren't playing.

To me the highlight of the concerts was the Hallelujah Chorus ... featuring the soprano's, the tenors, the Berlin Comedian singers and I'm sure both the women's choir and the men's choir (who stand behind the girls.) [They perform at the very large European DVD filmed concerts.] Absolutely thrilling.

Kimmy Skota's, "Ave Maria" is outstanding and received a whole hall standing ovation (as she did in Atlantic City) There was a South African segment included in the first half.

We got a European style indoor concert. The MECC is huge, modern & so much nicer than our stateside Arena's and the JSO staff had hung 98 gorgeous chandeliers from the ceiling. There were also (flat) replica's of the buildings around the Vrijthof erected. No confetti cannons, but they dropped balloons.

With the heat the Soprano's performed "Adieu" at the end without their hair extensions. They look equally good with shorter hair. And Mirusia came out on the floor to chat with us after the concert. As is often the case with Maastricht concerts, it was Sonja's birthday and Mirusia sang Happy Birthday to her. She, like the other girls, is so friendly and a joy to be around.

We drove Sonja and MaryAnn over to the MECC in our rental car. Our GPS stopped working and if we hadn't had Sonja with us to ask directions in Dutch, I think we'd be driving around over there yet trying to find the JFK bridge.

Upon returning, we went to dinner at the Chinese restaurant. Very good ~ with air conditioning. Bobbie & John de Jong along with John's sister Theresa were already having dinner and Chris & Siggy Plewa arrived along with their neighbor from across the street in Delaware and a friend from Colorado Springs, CO.

We could see the filled Vrijthof (standing room only), with everyone wearing orange. They watched the game on the big screens. Very well behaved. When Spain got their (winning) goal, Everyone began to leave. Quiet and very orderly.

Monday morning, we headed to Bastogne, Belgium & Luxembourg to see our historical monuments, cemeteries & museums. The U.S. lost 73,000 men in the Battle of the Bulge.

Wednesday was Bastille Day in France and most things were closed for the holiday. We stayed in Reims, France for two nights and the magnificent Reims Cathedral wan an unexpected thrill for me. My architect mother had paintings of two French Cathedrals hanging in our living room, one of them being Reims.

To our many U.S. fans and fans from around the world ~ if you want the thrill of a lifetime, start saving to go to Maastricht for a concert(s). There is nothing like it ... Laurie

Now, all we have to do is wait for the DVD to come out!

"The Musical Worlds of Linda Custers"

Maastricht resident Linda Custers plays (amongst others) fiddle with the Limburg Medieval Reincarnatus which she is on stage with a tight leather suit. One day later she plays the violin in the Orchestra of André Rieu, dressed in a baroque style gown. Both music groups have an International Career and as different as they are, Linda would not miss playing in either one of them.

"At the age of 4, I already wanted to play the violin. But the only thing I got were 'violins' (in English the plant violet) for the garden. My father was the manager of the Maastricht Music Academy and he played the flute. He did not like parents who wanted their children to become the best in the same profession as them".

At the age of 8 Linda received her violin. "And after a few months I played with André Rieu! Oh well ... played ... André performed with his Maastricht Salon Orchestra in Borgharen, the village where he lived. I was his fan and tried to scrape a few music pieces with him. He asked whether I wanted to make my profession out of it and next he advised against it. "You can not earn a penny with that", he joked. But that was 27 years ago.

Linda persevered, studied violin and viola at the Music Academy and she encouraged others into the profession. She had her own class with 25 young private pupils. She continued studying herself with the goal of playing in a Symphonic Orchestra. "That requires a huge knowledge of techniques, which you can only obtain by practicing very much. Every now and then I would play in such an orchestra".

André Rieu
Eight years ago she started in the Johann Strauss Orchestra with André Rieu. "That was completely different. The music was a lighter style. André wants to touch the people with his music and he wants to loosen up emotions during his concerts. People are emtionally touched. Often we see tears of happy emotions during his concerts. It is wonderful if you can arouse that. I played a few more times in the Symphonic Orchestra, but I like the JSO better. These musicians obviously have a different way of thinking, and I myself do not experience this as a job ...

"We are no Symphonic Orchestra. We improvise. Arrangements are often created during rehearsals. André has them in mind and he clearly explains, It has to sound like this or that ... During the rehearsals a lot is changed. A concert is growing that way ...Within a short period four different programs are scheduled: Heerenveen, Amsterdam, Heidelberg and Sydney. That means we have to rehearse every morning on the days we don't perform."

She plays in the JSO for 90% of the performances. "We are with 5 viola players, of whom minimal 3 are playing on stage during a concert. So, every now and then I can take a day off. That happens by mutual agreement."

Reincarnatus
Reincarnatus is a project of Joyce Hamers and Renate Dirix. "Renate also played with Rieu and Joyce took care of the video recordings. They left the orchestra in an amicable way to set up their own group inspired by music from the middle ages. The musical styles from the Middle Ages are translated to present times, with a combination of modern and traditional classical instruments. The group consists of seven female musicians. They asked me to join and I thought it would be an enormous challenge. I participated in a rehearsal and I immediately purchased a fiddle in Rome."

Linda was involved in Reincarnatus from the very beginning. During rehearsals the group developed. "Creating a project together is very exciting. I am one of the seven band members, but I also play solo's. In the beginning I did not feel at ease, for I am a little bit shy, but my experiences with André Rieu made me feel more free, also in playing classical music. With André we have 60 musicians and one conductor."

"Reincarnatus is good for me to grow. We play everything by heart. The group is also touring abroad and it is exciting to follow that process from the beginning. Dressing is different (tight leather) and the audience is different (trendier, younger)". Linda wouldn't miss Reincarnatus, "I play with them half of the total concerts per year."

Arranging a Lot
There is a lot to arrange to combine the two groups. "Sometimes it happens that I return home from an André Rieu Concert at 4:00 am and four hours later I depart with Reincarnatus. Or, I perform with Reincarnatus in Cologne and immediately afterwards I fly to Toronto for a concert tour with André Rieu, but everything turns out well."

She won't make a choice.
"I really like both orchestra's. The variation is fascinating". Imagine a Reincarnatus break through world wide, just like André Rieu? "No, I don't want to miss anything. I choose to work half and half and I absolutely do not want to leave André.

Imagine, Reincarnatus is invited for a guest performance in an André Rieu Concert?
"Then I would put on my leather suit under my baroque ball gown and at the moment of performance I can have a quick change. Yes, changing clothes would be necessary, for I cannot play André's music in the leather outfit and visa versa".
